L.FrankBaumneverimaginedtheimpactTheWonderfulWizardofOzwouldhaveonchildren'swritingortheappealthebookwouldhavetogenerationsofreaders.Althoughhewrotenumerousbooks,TheWonderfulWizardofOziseasilyhismostenduring.BaumwantedtowriteafairytalethatwasAmerican,notEuropean,althoughheintroducedelementsoftraditionalEuropeanfairytales(witches,castles,forests)intothestory.Bypresentingafemaleprotagonist,casuallanguage,characterssuchastheScarecrowandtheTinWoodman,andsettingssuchasKansas,Baumcreatedanewapproachtochildren'swritingthatisdistinctlyAmerican.BeforeTheWonderfulWizardofOz,children'sbookswerestiltedmoralitytalesdesignedtoinstructortofrightenreadersintobehavingproperly.Baum,however,presentedathrillingadventurefromachild'spointofview,showingthechild'sabilitytosolveherownproblemsandreturntothesecurityofherhome.TheWonderfulWizardofOzreceivedpraisefromcriticsandreadersalike.CriticsapplaudedBaum'ssimplestorytelling,hismessage,andhisimaginative,believablecharacters.ReadersfellinlovewiththewondersofOzanddemandedmorebooksaboutthisenchantedland.AlthoughthebookdidnotwinanyawardsduringBaum'slifetime,itwasgiventheLewisCarrollShelfAwardin1968.
